Brief History:Records of organised race meetings in Co. Galway go back to the middle of the 19th century and according to local tradition, steeplechase races were run annually at Kiltulla east of Ballybrit for many years prior to 1868 when due to flooding of course the races were transferred in 1868 to Bushfield, beyond Oranmore. These we were told were the forerunners of the Galway Races. Contemporary sources record that there was n attendance of approximately 50,000 on the opening day at Ballybrit on Tuesday August 17th 1869 and that 35,000 turned up on the second day of the two day meeting. It is reported that the park in Eyre Square was used as a camping site to accomodate the huge crowds that arrived for the occasion. This first meeting was an overwhelming success, and the Galway races have gone from strength to strength since the early days. With the introduction of the three day meeting in 1961, the idea of sponsorship was initiated, and almost every race during the ten days of racing each year is sponsored. The Summer festival meeting has expanded to seven days.
